Hosiery Terminology

These are sone commonly used terms to describe hosiery.

Which are found on packets and adverts, some of these are old and out date however others are still relevant today and can seen on packets.

Ankle High Relatively new concept like short socks in size extending just above the ankle made in sheer nylon for wearing with long boots or ankle boots


Artificial Silk Natural fiber used to make stocking from 1911 to around the late 1945, Artificial Silk is slightly different to Rayon and would be eventually replaced by Nylon,


Bare Tights Bare tights also know as Naturals or Ultra sheers these are made to look like the ladies not wearing hosiery at all, typically they are made from 8 or 7 denier sometimes even down to 5 denier fibre.


Boarding Process used to improve the fit of nylon hosiery the leg is put over a metal form and subjected pressure and heat from a steam iron.


Bodyfree Modern name for suspender tights, A suspender made out of the same yarn as the leg attached to the stocking


Boxer brief Where the denier of the brief or panty is different to the lag and goes down the leg like a pair of boxer shorts/


Cashmere A very expensive fibre taken from the undercoat of the Kashmir goats, gives hosiery a very soft and luxuriously feel to it


Circular knitting Refers to the modern process of producing seam free legs in hosiery, made by using a circular knitting machine this machine was first developed around 1850's and seam free stocking made frequent appearance because the machine was not capable of automatically decreasing the number of stitches the resulting stocking were very baggy this problem was not sorted out until the 1950's when a machine was developed to allowed the to decreasing and increasing the number of stitches.


Comfort Top A wider than normal waistband on tights and pantyhose to stop it digging into the wearer body, also found on knee high or pop socks


Control Top Tights or pantyhose made with a thicker top or gusset usually lycra or a elastic material to help shape a ladies figure


Cotton Crotch A cotton panel sewn into the crotch area of pantyhose for comfort, found mainly on the more expensive brand of hosiery


Cotton Sole Originally seen on early stocking A cotton insert sewn or knit into the sole of the stocking or pantyhose however these are making.


Cuban heel A stocking with a heel made with folded over and sewn reinforcement. Similar in shape to the French point however the Cuban heel is flat at the top.


Demi Toe Stockings which have a reinforced toe with half the coverage on top as on the bottom. This results in a reinforcement that covers only the tip of the toes as opposed to the whole toe. These can be with or without a reinforced heel


Denier The lower the denier number the sheerer the garment. Stockings knitted with a higher denier tend to be less sheer but more durable.


Fashion Tights A generic name given to hosiery with follows or reflects the latest trends in style, using colour, pattern of texture.


Fence Nets Fishnet tights or stocking made with a larger net


Finishing The last processes in the production of hosiery, including dyeing, boarding, pairing, and packaging


Firm Support Hosiery which gives extra support for the leg , defined as the compression factor, the compression factor is printed on the packet normally between 4 and 10,Ten been the highest.


Fishnet Knitted stockings with a very wide open knit resembling a fish net. Fence net - Similar to fishnet, but with a much wider pattern. the modern way of wearing these is over another pair of stockings or pantyhose, such as matt natural pair or with a contrasting colour under them.


Flat nylon This is the yarn used up until in the 1960 for fully fashioned stocking it has little stretch and stocking were sold by foot size and length.


Flight socks Compression socks worn by both men and women to aid the circulation of blood in the legs when sitting for long periods of time without been able to exercise, worn mainly on long aircraft flights


French point heel This can just be called a "Point Heel" or "French heel" and sometimes a "swing heel" , Basic triangle with the point extending up to the seam of the stocking


Full Fashioned Stockings are knitted flat, the material is then cut and the two sides are then united by a seam up the back. fashioned stockings were the most popular style until the 1960's


Gauge The measurement of the distance between needles in a knitting machine. The gauge is marked on the packet of older stocking to define that sheerness of the stocking


Gloss Refers to the finish of the stockings, tights or pantyhose which have a shinny or glossy finish.


Gusset To reinforce a joint where two or more disconnected parts meet, for tights and it reinforces the top part of tights and also has hygienic function often with a cotton insert, a word taken from a component of late Medieval armour spelt gusset .


Havana heel Similar to the Cuban heel in shape except that the Havana heel is wider than the Cuban


Hold-ups or Stay-ups 

Stockings that are held up by sewn-in elasticized bands (quite often a wide lace top band), and the more expensive brands often have some silicone rings to aid the grip on the leg.

Hosiery Is a collective name given to a tight-fitting garments worn directly on the feet and legs by both men and women. The word hosiery comes from old Anglo Saxon hose was singular and the plural was hosen. Hosiery today is more referring to ladies stocking, tights and pantyhose.


Knee-Highs A sock which is made in the same way as either stocking or tights which terminate at or just below the knee.


Lace Top  The Fancy decoration in the form of lace which replaces the traditional plain welt on the top of a stocking  for decorative purposes.

Leg wear A term used more as a modern market strategy by hosiery manufactures to describe hosiery, to encourage the wearing of tights or stocking.


Lisle Hosiery made of lisle yarn, which is a fine, hard-twisted, long-staple cotton yarn with two or more ply


Lycra A registered trade name of a elastic fibre developed by Du point in 1957, which is used to give hosiery stretch for a better fit.


Make up for legs Another term used to describe hosiery which are sheer and evens out the tone of a ladies leg, more a marketing team than a physical attribute.


Merino Wool from Spain of then used with other fibres to make warm opaque hosiery.


Micro fiber A number of very fine fibres twisted together to produce one single fibre which can be knitted, this produces a very soft feel to the hosiery.


Mock seam A seam which is stitched into the back of the leg of either tights or stocking to give the look of a seam, this process is cheaper to do than sewing together a flat leg to make the seam.


Moisturising tights or stocking A new innovation to include a very small amount of moisturising cream in the hosiery which is released onto the leg through out the day.


MONO filament yarn A Single thread




MULTI Filament yarn
Several single threads twisted together to form a thicker yarn i.e. four 5 denier thread twisted together to form a 20 denier yarn.


Nude This can either refer to the shade with is similar to the tone of the skin. or it can be used to describe very sheer tights made of 8 or even 5 denier fibre.

Nylon A man made or synthetic fibre developed in 1937 by Dupoint, Nylon has many other uses today apart from hosiery


Nylons A popular name used to describe a pair of stocking made from nylon yarn


One Size Hosiery which is made in one size and will fit a average lady


Opaque Opaque - Hosiery made of yarn which give them a heavier appearance (usually 40 denier or greater).


Open-toed Stockings that stop at the base of the toe with a piece that goes between the first and second toes to hold them down. They can be worn with some open-toed shoes, especially to show off pedicure toes


Pantyhose A modem development from the USA often referred to as hose combining a sheer modern stocking and panty into one garment, known in the UK as tights (tights for US ladies is used in the older context of a thicker all in one garment


Plain knit The name given to the stich used, plain knit is the most common stich, Plain knit gives a smooth, sheer surface mainly in pre 1970.


Plus Size A much larger size of hosiery


Point Heel See French Point Heel).


Polyamide European name for Nylon


Pop Stocks a Modern name for knee high (see knee high)


Reinforced toe A strengthening or reinforcing panel which cover the toes of sheer tights or stocking.


RHT Abbreviation of reinforced heel and toe these are seamless stocking in the main.


Ribbed The pattern which ran down the leg, these are knitted in and thus makes the hosiery thicker, mainly worn in winter.


Run Guard To catch runs, situated between the welt and the sheer leg the purpose was to catch runs from the the clips


Run Proof A knitted process in which the loops are locked to prevent runs.


Run Resist Used to describe hosiery which will not run if they are damaged


Runs Stitches that have unchained due to broken stitches. which will move down the leg producing a "Run"


Sandal foot Stockings with a nude toe, meaning no heavier yarn in the toe than is in the leg


Seamed Stockings manufactured in the old Full-Fashioned manner with a seam running up the back of the leg. In the past they were manufactured by cutting the fabric and then sewing it together. Today stockings are generally fully knitted and a fake or mock seam is added up the back for a particular fashion look


Seamless Stockings knit in one operation on circular machines (one continuous operation) so that no seaming is required up the back


Seamless tights Tights made in one piece without a seam in the panty they are always more expensive to buy , it's said they are more comfortable to wear and no panty seen to show through when worn with close fitting clothes.


Seconds Hosiery sold at a cheaper price as they might have flaws in the knit finish, or colour.


Shaper A panty top with more support than a regular control top pany to hold in either the tummy or bottom or both at the same time.


Sheer to waist pantyhose or tights which use the same thickness of yarn for the leg ant panty


Sheers Stockings/tights (pantyhose) generally between 10 to 20 denier


Silk A traditional and natural fibre s obtained from the cocoons of various types of silkworms, used from the 1500 to produce the most expensive and luxuriously hosiery, Still used today to make stockings and tights.


Spandex Generic name of a elastic fibre, which is used to give hosiery a small amount of stretch to make a better fitting.


Stockings The word stock used to refer to the bottom "stump" part of the body, used to refer to the one-piece covering of the lower trunk and limbs then by the 1400's essentially tights consisting of the upper-stocks ( as fashions change later later on to be worn separately as knee breeches) and nether-stocks (covering the lower leg been called stockings).


Stretch Nylon Developed in the mid 1960 for use in one size hosiery.


Tactel Microfiber Brand name from DuPont for it's microfiber hosiery yarns (less than 1 DPF) these fibres makes hosiery very soft to wear


Textured hosiery Used to describe hosiery that has a knitted pattern in it usually seen on opaque hosiery. Thigh-Highs - Stockings that terminate somewhere in the mid-thigh.


Thigh Highs Yet another name for , hold up, Stay  puts or self support stockings


Trouser Socks Modern name for the old pop socks or knee high, hosiery to wear under trousers extending to the top of the calf.


Ultra Sheer A fine denier fibre which gives the ultimate in sheerness. normally less than 10 denier, 8,7 and 5 denier.


Ventilation A knitting process used in tights & pantyhose in the crotch area to make it easier for air the flow around  the crotch, occasionally used in the foot area.


Waistband A knitted band above the panty of a pair of tights or pantyhose to hug the wearers body to hold up the hosiery


Welt A fabric knitted separately and machine-sewn to at the top of the stocking, older stockings the welt can be made in cotton
